This is a great infographic from Dachis Group that shows the differences between a social business and the traditional business model.
The summary version is:
-Benefits of being a social business include: being better connected, its easier to find experts and the organisation becomes more dynamic
-A business that is not socially-evolved is likely to suffer from: lower staff engagement, lower creativity and be slow to change
-A social business gather knowledge first and organises second and is build around community rather than being a top-down system.
